HASSAN: Five people died and seven were injured in three separate accidents in Hassan district.

Additional Superintendent of Police Yellappa said that early on Friday morning, ambulance driver Gangadhara was taking an injured Lalithamma (24) from the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences to Bangalore. He stopped the vehicle near Kathharighatta on NH-48 to give the Lalithamma a drink when a KSRTC bus hit the ambulance from behind. While Lalithamma and a pregnant Suchitra (30), who was also in the vehicle, died on the spot, the driver and three others are undergoing treatment. Police have seized the bus and is looking for the driver. Kumara (30) and Manjachari (26), both carpenters from Arkalgud taluk, died on the way to hospital on Thursday night after their motorcycle hit a tipper lorry that braked suddenly on the Mysore-Hassan road, near Bastihalli.

A jeep hit the lorry too injuring three. All were taken to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. The Gorur police are hunting for the lorry driver. In the third accident, Shivalinge Gowda (30), a carpenter in Bangalore, died at the government hospital in Hirisave after his motorcycle was hit by a lorry near Kallallo village on Friday morning. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.
