Five persons were killed on the spot when a sand-laden lorry overturned near Parvathapurakatte in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district on Wednesday.

The victims were sand loaders who were seated atop the truck which rolled over while negotiating a sharp curve.

The victims were identified as Nanjundaswamy (35), Gurushantha (32) Chinnaswamy (39), Mahadevaiah (40) and R.K. Mahadevaiah (35), all from Raghavapura.

The police said the truck was heading towards Gundlupet from Nanjangud.

The truck was using village roads instead of the main road, where loaded vehicles are inspected at several points. The police suspect that the truck was carrying sand that was illegally extracted.

The police said that the road had become slushy due to the recent heavy rain, and the truck overturned near a curve burying the five victims.

The driver and four others who were in the cabin escaped unhurt.

Senior police officials visited the spot.

The Chamarajanagar Rural police are investigating the case.
