Bangalore South MP H.N. Ananth Kumar on Thursday announced that Rs. 25 lakh would be released from the MP and MLA Local Area Development Fund, to facilitate the purchasing of folk instruments by folklore artistes.
Inaugurating the Janapada Jatre organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture, Mr. Kumar said the means for the purchase of folk instruments would be made available through the MP and MLA fund and disbursed to 100 folk artistes recommended by the department.
He said that he, along with Minister for Kannada and Culture Govind M. Karjol, would press Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda to increase the folk artistes' welfare fund from Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 1crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Karjol regretted that people in urban areas were not watching folk performances. “We have a great folklore tradition and the government is doing its best to protect and promote folk arts and culture,” he said.
He called upon the people, especially in cities, to encourage folk arts by participating in them and watching folk performances. Over 15 folk troupes from various parts of the State performed on the occasion.
