The federation has decided to establish a General Thimayya Institute of Military Science and a Sports and Cultural Academy at Baalugodu in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu.

A sports complex will be constructed in the first phase. The complex will come up on 15 acres at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crore.

Gen. Thimayya, who was born in Madikeri on March 31, 1906, was popularly known as Timmy. The late General was very fond of sports. His favourite games were hockey and tennis. He was an accomplished rider and loved horse and dogs, according to the federation. He also enjoyed sailing.

The complex would be built on the lines of the sports complex at Patiala in Punjab. It would have a hostel for sportspersons. The federation had already raised Rs. 1 crore for the complex and purchased 15 acres, he said.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who participated in the General birth centenary celebrations at Madikeri on April 7, had agreed to extend financial aid to the federation, said M.N. Belliappa, its vice-president.
