: Shamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA and veteran Congress leader, and his son S.S. Mallikarjun, former Minister, are both in the running for the party ticket to contest from Davangere North and South constituencies.

Both have put in much effort to build the party’s presence in Davangere and Chitradurga and are making an all-out attempt for nomination. Mr. Shivashankarappa, who is also the KPCC treasurer, is keen on contesting from Davangere South, from where he had won in the last elections. Mr. Mallikarjun was not nominated in the last elections.

In his place a minority leader, Syed Saifullah, was chosen. However, Mr. Mallikarjun was a Minister in S.M. Krishna’s Cabinet.

He was also instrumental in the Congress’ victory in the recent polls to the Davangere City Corporation council. The Congress secured 38 seats of the total 41.

There has been a vehement demand from the District Congress Committee to provide the party ticket to father and son. DCC general secretary D. Basavaraj said there was nothing wrong in allowing both to contest. There is no doubt that Mr. Shivashankarappa and Mr. Mallikarjun would emerge victorious in the elections if given the ticket, he said. Similarly H. Duggappa, KPCC member, said most of the members in the city corporation council had argued in favour of giving them ticket. They feel that Mr. Shivashankarappa and Mr. Mallikarjun have worked hard for the party and deserve to contest, Mr. Duggappa said.

However, many from the Muslim community in the city have demanded that Davangere South be reserved for a Muslim leader.
