TUMKUR: Farmers, who have been agitating over shortage of fertilizers, hurled stones at a cinema, marriage hall and a house owned by actor Jaggesh at Mayasandra in Turuvekere taluk of Tumkur district.

Over 2,000 farmers staged a “rasta roko” on Mysore-Bidar State Highway at the Mayasandra main circle since morning. In the afternoon, the farmers cooked food on the road itself, and soon after lunch turned their ire against Mr. Jaggesh.

The actor won from Turuvekere on the Congress ticket, but later resigned from the Legislative Assembly and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The immediate provocation for the farmers was that M.T. Krishnappa, Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Turuvekere MLA, who visited them during the lunch, pleaded his inability to help them as he was not an MLA. The farmers felt “orphaned.”

Added to this was the news in a local paper on a statement by Mr. Jaggesh (issued from Bangalore) that he would soon hold a “Bruhat BJP Sammelan” at Turuvekere and that he would invite the BJP national leaders and chief ministers of BJP-ruled States to it.

The farmers hurled stones at the house of Mr. Jaggesh and the adjacent cinema, Nalini Kamal Talkies, and the marriage hall, Shivalingappa Kalyana Mantapa.

All three were close to the place where the farmers’ staged the dharna.

The police said not much damage was caused to any of the three structures and no one was hurt.
