BIDAR: About 200 farmers from Bemalkheda and surrounding villages of Humnabad taluk of the district staged a “rasta roko” on Saturday. They demanded a supply of 6,000 bags of fertilizers.

The farmers blocked National Highway 9 at Bangur cross of Humnabad taluk. They withdrew their protest after Joint Director of Agriculture S.B. Mudagal visited the spot and assured them that steps would be taken to ensure they received adequate quantities of fertilizers.

Mr. Mudagal told the agitating farmers that the supply of fertilizers had been hit owing to transport problems. Another round of fertilizers would be supplied to them within June 26, he said.

He said that the farmers were demanding 6,000 bags of fertilizers but “officials would look into the exact need and take steps to supply the fertilizers to them”. He said that as on June 18, 2,500 tonnes of DAP fertilizers had been supplied.

Mr. Mudagal said the distribution of fertilizers through Prathamika Krishi Sahakara Sanghas had started in all taluks. A quantity of 281 tonnes of fertilizers will be distributed in Bidar taluk, 467 tonnes in Humnabad taluk, 446 tonnes in Basavakalyan taluk, 523 tonnes in Bhalki taluk, and 526 tonnes in Auirad taluk.

He asked the farmers to call him on 9880749568 or Agriculture Officer (technical) in case of any difficulties.
