Farmers staged a protest at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard in Belur town on Wednesday in protest against the fall in the purchase price of green chilli.

They alleged that the merchants at the yard were cheating them by reducing the price. The merchants had purchased chilli at Rs. 18 a kg on Tuesday and most of Wednesday, but by nightfall were offering only Rs. 15 a kg, they said. Saying that chilli was still going at Rs. 18 a kg in Hassan and Chikmagalur, farmers raised slogans, against the merchants leading to a tense situation.

The police came to the spot and pacified the farmers. They made efforts to bring about a compromise and price was settled between Rs. 16 and Rs. 18 a kg, after which the farmers withdrew their dharna.
