The Kabini Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti staged a protest here on Thursday against the Supreme Court directive to the State to release 10,000 cusecs of water daily till Sunday.

The farmers assembled outside the office of the Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department and submitted a memorandum.

Led by farmers’ leader Kurubur Shanthakumar, they demanded that the State file a review petition. There was no water in reservoirs in the State to last through summer. The State could expect rain again only during the monsoon in June, Mr. Shanthakumar said.

He suggested that Tamil Nadu construct reservoirs to store water discharged during a season of plenty, instead of pressurising Karnataka to release Cauvery waters during times of distress.

The samiti members threatened to take over reservoirs if the government failed to protect the interests of farmers.

Leaders including Attahalli Devaraj, Manjunath Urs, Kurubur Sandesh and K.G. Guruswamy were present.
