SHIMOGA: Farmers of Tarikatte village in Bhadravati taluk along with their families staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday in protest against the move to acquire their land for industrial use.
Farmers under the banner of the Bhooswadhina Virodhi Horata Samiti took out a protest march from Sahyadri College to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The protesters said that the State Government had issued a gazette notification with regard to acquiring about 360 to 400 acres of agricultural land in Tarikatte, Hiriyur, Aralikoppa and Kalanakatte villages in the taluk for the setting up of industries.
Village residents said that officers from the Department of Revenue had issued a notice on August 22 to which some of them had filed objections. They said that the revenue officials had declared the notifies land dry though coconut, areca, banana, sugarcane and paddy were being cultivated there. Over 4,000 farmers were dependent upon these lands for sustenance. They also staged a “rasta roko” at Ambedkar Circle in Bhadravati town. M.J. Appaji Gowda, former MLA, samiti president Sobya Nayak and general secretary A. Mastan were present.
