BELLARY: About 40 farmers from Davanagere, who launched the ‘jail bharo’ agitation to press for their demands and had been lodged in the Central Jail here, began a hunger strike on Monday.

According to official sources, the farmers, led by Hasiru Sene vice-president Nituwalli Kengappa rejected breakfast and lunch to pressure the Davangere Urban Development Authority to drop the proposal to acquire fertile land. The farmers are also pressing for the reopening of Bhadra sugar factory.

Eight of the farmers had been sent for check-up to the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences.
