Burdened by loan problems, seven members of a family attempted suicide by consuming poison here on Saturday evening in Subramanya Layout police limits.

Muni Reddy (34), his wife, Kavita (28), their children Ruchita (7) and Ankita (2), and Muni Reddy's parents, Tayanna Reddy (65), Venkatamma (55), and grandmother, Muniamma (80), consumed juice laced with pesticide in their house on Ramamurthy Nagar I Main, the police said. While Tayanna is in a critical condition, the other six are out of danger, the police added.

Ramamurthy Nagar police said that Muni Reddy, who worked as a manager in a cargo company, had taken loans which he could not pay back. Depressed over this, he tried to commit suicide. Being the only earning member of the family, the police said, the whole family decided to end their lives along with him.

Minutes later, a neighbour who had come to the house alerted others and the family was rushed to hospital.

“As the entire family is still unconscious, we haven't determined the exact loan amount that was taken by Muni Reddy,” the police said.
