Police: signature in seized fake certificates tallied with that of tahsildar’s

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga city police on Sunday arrested two women on the charge of distributing fake caste, income and domicile certificates and seized seals, 33 fake caste and income certificates, 12 fake domicile certificates and Rs. 5,000 from them.

The police gave the names of the arrested as Ramabai Shravankumar Gaekwad (50) of Basavanagar and Gangubai Basavaraj Shivankar (28) of Sanjeev Nagar.

The accused reportedly admitted that they were operating in the city for the past five months and used to collect Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 for issuing fake certificates.

The accused used to operate from the compound of the tahsildar’s office and lure those who came to the office for the certificates, the police said.

The women issued the signed certificates within four hours of the payment of money, they added.

The police said that the tahsildar’s signature tallied with the signature in the fake blank certificates seized from the arrested women. Even the seals that were seized appeared genuine, sparking suspicion about the involvement of some officials of the tahsildar office in the racket, the police said.

The seized fake blank certificates and the tahsildar’s original signature would be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to ascertain if the signatures were the same, the police added.
