Officials of the Department of Factories and Boilers (under the Ministry of Labour) said on Friday a show-cause notice will soon be issued to the management of the Hi-Tech Forgings Private Ltd. citing security lapses that cost three lives.
On Thursday, three workers of the factory, located in Peenya Industrial area, were asphyxiated when they were told to get into an underground tank to haul furnace oil for the engine.
Speaking to The Hindu , a senior department official who visited the site said the management had not taken necessary precautions when entering a confined space like the tank.
“Personal protective equipment was not provided to the workers. We have now prohibited usage of the tank until the company assures us of proper protective measures,” he said.
The department is providing Rs. 8 lakh compensation for each of the bereaved families on humanitarian grounds, apart from Rs. 30,000 for the last rites. “We are even trying to secure employment for someone in the family,” he said.
Rajesh Balachandran, general manager, Personal Safety Division, 3M India Ltd., shared his views on the importance of safety in an industrial environment. “Karnataka houses nearly 26 MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) clusters and 83 notified artisan industrial hubs. Often, smaller industrial clusters tend to overlook employee safety.”
