A 32-year-old woman attempted suicide at a family court here on Monday after she was asked to pay Rs. 300 for not filing an objection to a divorce petition filed by her husband.

The alert court staff stopped Shaila from pouring kerosene on herself and handed her over to the jurisdictional Wilson Garden police for further investigations.

Shaila, who is partially visually impaired, was married to Dhanraj, a private firm employee, 16 years ago and the couple had two daughters aged 14 and six.

Two years ago, Dhanraj filed for divorce, suspecting her fidelity. The case is pending before the Fifth Additional Family Court. After Dhanraj left her, Shaila started doing odd jobs to support the family and for the treatment of her younger daughter, who is suffering from cardiac related ailments. She also filed a dowry harassment case.
