The impact of the blast was such that a house about 100 metres away was extensively damaged by flying debris. Lakshmi Devamma, the owner, was relaxing with her year-old grandson when she heard the blasts.

The next moment, the debris started raining on her house even as she fled, scooping the baby in her arms. Her daughter-in-law Pallavi, who was washing clothes, suffered injuries.

Hundreds of onlookers perched on rooftops and terraces nearby to watch the rescue operations. Residents in adjacent lanes offered tea and snacks to those engaged in rescue operations.

Towering problems

Narasimhanapalya residents fear that a huge telecom tower, now standing precariously on marriage hall terrace, will collapse any moment on their homes.
