The Karnataka Tamils’ Coordinating Organisation has demanded that Sri Lanka’s membership in the Commonwealth of Nations be suspended until its senior leaders are tried for war crimes. The demand comes against the backdrop of the non -participation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the ongoing Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Sri Lanka.
Addressing press here on Tuesday, B.N. Devadas, president of the organisation said it is not enough for the Prime Minister to just boycott the summit. As a responsible regional power, India should also play a key role in isolating Sri Lankan leadership on the diplomatic high table and push for suspension of its membership from the commonwealth, he added.
He said the recent video evidence provided by Channel Four, which purportedly shows a young female journalist being raped and murdered by alleged Sri Lankan army regulars, provides further proof of war crimes committed in Sri Lanka.
