Excavation at a construction site near the Bharatinagar police station caused the wall of an adjoining building to collapse late on Wednesday evening.

The damaged building is now slanting precariously and has been evacuated.

Workers labouring at the construction site had a narrow escape; they took a tea break minutes before the mishap.

The owner of the construction site had deployed heavy earthmoving machinery at the site. The vibrations caused the adjoining wall to collapse, complained residents of this locality where most buildings have no setback and share common walls with bordering buildings in blatant violation of law.

Some residents also complained that the owner of the construction site did not have the necessary clearances from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

Officials at the Bharatinagar police station said they had only prepared a preliminary report and would proceed against the building owner if they found that he had violated building laws.
