The Episcopal ordination of S.J. Francis Serrao, who has been appointed the new Bishop of Shimoga diocese, will be held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral here on Wednesday.

Most Rev. Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio, who is the representative of Vatican, will be the principal consecrator, while Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev. Bernard Moras and Apostolic Administrator of Shimoga diocese Henry D’ Souza will be co-consecrators. Minister for Surface Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes, Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Rathnakar and Minister of State for Fisheries and Ports K. Abhayachandra Jain will participate.

The Shimoga diocese, comprising Shimoga, Davangere and Chitradurga districts, came into existence in 1989. The 55-year-old Francis Serrao, who hails from Moodbidri, will be the third Bishop of the Shimoga diocese. He will be succeeding Most Rev. Gerald Isac Lobo, who has been transferred to Udupi diocese. Fr. Francis Serrao was the Rector at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, from 2004 to 2009 and Provincial of the Karnataka Jesuits since 2009.

Social activist and president of the Federation of Karnataka Catholic and Christian Associations T.J. Abraham has welcomed the appointment of Karnataka’s Jesuit Provincial Fr. Francis Serrao as new Bishop of Shimoga diocese. The appointment of a Kannadiga as Bishop was an honour for Kannada-speaking people, he said at a press conference here.
