Residents of Kyatanmale, Golya, Hosahalli and Kalamarahalli took out a procession and staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Wednesday, demanding the authorities to take action against those involved in illegal sand extraction from the Vedavathi river in the district.

The agitators stated that those involved in illegal extraction of sand had violated all norms and dug more than six to seven feet into the river. They had also ignored repeated warnings from officers and elected representatives.

Officers of the departments of Revenue, Police and Public Works had not initiated any action against those involved despite repeated appeals. They submitted a memorandum to Assistant Commissioner M.N. Nagaraj and said they would resort to a fast if the illegal extraction of sand was not stopped.
