Shop owners alleged that the squad damaged some buildings

  • Encroachments in Nehru Gunj locality were removed
  • Task force had given directions that no building be touched

GULBARGA: The drive against encroachment of the Gulbarga city roads launched by the Gulbarga City Corporation and the Public Works Department (PWD) on Wednesday was called off abruptly. The decision followed a protest by shop owners after the demolition squad allegedly damaged portions of some buildings during the demolition of the encroachments near Nehru Gunj Locality.

The drive, which was taken up in Bamboo Bazaar in the morning, ran into trouble after the damage of at least six buildings. The JCB machine used for removing the encroachments damaged portions of the buildings when they attempted to remove the hoardings.

Commissioner of the Corporation S.P. Mudhol pacified the agitated traders and asked the team to suspend the operation for the day.

The petty shop owners also took serious exception to the damage to their shops put up illegally on the city roads during the encroachment removal drive by the corporation and PWD personnel. They complained to the Corporation Commissioner that the demolition team was not authorised to damage their shops and were only asked to remove the encroachments.

Mr. Mudhol said the encroachments for about one km length of the road in the Nehru Gunj locality was removed on Thursday. To a question, he said that the task force appointed by the Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey to remove the encroachments on the roads had given clear directions that no building should be touched during the drive against encroachments. Only the extension of the shops and petty shops, which had come up on the drains and roads, would have to be removed.

Further, only constructions on the road from drain to drain on either of the Public Works Department roads should be cleared.

He said that on inquiry with the personnel involved in the drive revealed that they only acted as per the directions of the officials of the corporation and PWD.

    No demolitions

Mr. Mudhol said that there would not be any demolitions for the next two days and the Corporation proposes to take up the drive against the encroachments on the city corporation roads henceforth. A detailed action plan would be worked out and implemented in this regard, he added.
