Six killed in Tumkur, five in Mangalore
Tumkur/Mangalore: Six young men from Bangalore were killed in a road accident at Doddaguni, near here, on Tumkur-Honnavar National Highway No. 206, on Sunday night. They were travelling in a car from Bangalore when a lorry laden with minerals rammed into their car. The young men, all technical staff of Airtel, were on their way to a wedding reception when tragedy struck.
In a separate incident in Mangalore on Monday, five youths were killed after their car collided with a private bus that was allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road. The accident occurred at around 7.30 a.m. at Panambur on National Highway No.17, that connects the city with Udupi. The deceased have been identified as Vikram Bhat (27), Preetham R.K. (26), Anwar (21), Lionel (22) and Sheik Shameer (20). According to the Panambur police, the youngsters were returning from a vacation in Goa, while the bus was heading towards Udupi.
A case has been registered against one Fredrick Vas, who has been identified as the driver of the bus.
He is said to have abandoned the vehicle soon after the accident. The bus belonged to the travel firm, Manjunath Roadlines.
The collision was such that the Fire Services personnel who arrived on the spot were hard-pressed to separate the two vehicles.
Even in the accident at Tumkur, a crane was used to separate the vehicles. Gas-cutting machines were used to remove the crushed bodies out of the car. The . Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural), Girish, said those killed in the accident were T. Ramesh, Girish, Lokesh, Mahesh, Harsha and Jagadish.
Girish was married was a native of Byranayakanahalli in Tumkur district. The other five belonged to Bangalore. The bodies were brought to the General Hospital at Gubbi in the district, and then handed over to the relatives after the post-mortem on Monday, the police said.
In another road acciddent at Yellapura, on the outskirts of Tumkur, Krishnamurthy, driver of an autorikshaw, was killed when a private bus knocked down his vehicle on Sunday night.
His wife, who was in the autorikshaw, was critically injured and she has been hospitalised.
