: An elderly woman was strangled at her residence in Tirumala Pura village in Basaralu police station limits on Wednesday night.

According to the police, the assailant took the gold jewellery that the victim was wearing.

Police identified the victim as Nagamma Siddaiah (65).

The murder was discovered by her son Chandra after he returned from his fields at night. He informed the police after he saw the body lying in a room, an officer at the Basaralu police station told The Hindu on Friday.

The assailant used a rope to kill the victim and escaped with a gold chain and earrings of the victim. However, all other valuables were intact, officer added.

Police suspect the involvement of someone known to the victim’s family.

The police said prima facie, the murder was for gain.
