Support price for paddy set at Rs. 1,250; for maize at Rs. 1,175 a quintal

The Uttara Kannada district administration has decided to set up eight centres in the district to buy paddy and maize. This decision was taken at a meeting of the task force headed by Deputy Commissioner Inkanglo Jameer.

Last year, five such centres were opened in the district. This year, farmers demanded more centres, said the officials. The eight centres would come up in Mundgod, Haliyal, Kumta, Ankola, Sirsi, Jagalbet, Siddapur, and Honnavar. The Deputy Commissioner has asked the officials to open support centres to buy paddy within 15 days.

The government has declared the support price of Rs. 1,250 a quintal for general paddy, and Rs. 1,280 a quintal for ‘A’ grade paddy. The support price for maize has been fixed at Rs. 1,175 a quintal. Last year, 15,134 quintals of paddy was purchased by the government at the support centres in Sirsi, Haliyal, Mundgod, Kumta and Karwar, said D.P. Hegde, Assistant Director of Agricultural Produce Market Committee .

The Deputy Commissioner asked the officials to ensure that there was no delay in payment to farmers. The equipment to check moisture in paddy should be in good condition, and agents and mediators should not be allowed to interfere with the process. Facility to dry paddy should be provided to farmers outside these support centres, and confusion during the purchase, like last year, should not be repeated, Ms. Jameer said.

She said support centres for maize should be ready in Mundgod and Haliyal taluks, where the crop is grown. Last year, the support price was less than the market price, and so there was not much activity at these centres.

Agriculture Assistants should be given proper guidance and farmers should be informed in advance about the date of purchase of paddy and maize. She said daily report of purchases at these centres should be conveyed to the district administration. If there was provision in the APMC to buy moisture checking machine, it should be bought, the Deputy Commissioner said. Additional Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mahantesh and several senior officials were present.
