The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has threatened to launch an agitation if the State government does not appoint skilled teachers for children with disabilities.

Speaking to The Hindu after a meeting on employment of trained and certified Integrated Education for Disabled Children (IEDC) teachers on Saturday, DYFI State secretary Rajashekaramurthy said there were more than 1.3 lakh children with disabilities in government schools. “Instead of appointing 1,022 qualified IEDC teachers, the government is giving short-term training to existing teachers.

“According to government statistics, we need about 20,000 teachers to educate the children with a student to teacher ratio of 8:1. But the government is not willing to employ even a small fraction of that,” he said.
