Despite restrictions on erecting hoardings without the permission of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC), unauthorised hoardings can be found in many places, marring the city’s beauty.

Perhaps, in view of the public criticism of the visual pollution, assistant commissioners of all nine MCC zones were directed to clear such hoardings.

Accordingly, 113 hoardings were removed from eight zones during a drive conducted recently. The highest number of hoardings — 34 — was removed from Zone 4. Another 26 hoardings each were cleared in zones 5 and 6. The number of hoardings cleared from other zones were as follows: Zone 1 (2), Zone 2 (6), Zone 3 (12), Zone 7 (3) and Zone 8 (4), a press release from the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), MCC, said.

However, no hoardings had been cleared in Zone 9. It’s unclear whether there were none or the drive was not carried out in the zone. The issue of illegal hoardings had been discussed in some council meetings. During one such meeting, the members, cutting across party lines, had raised the issue of rise in the number of hoardings.
