PANAJI: Following continued agitation by villagers, Chief Secretary J.P. Singh on Tuesday ordered that the dredging activity in river Sal in south Goa be stopped immediately. “I have directed the Captain of Ports to issue a notice to Hotel Leela Ventures to immediately stop the dredging work,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Secretary had a discussion with members of the Save River Sal Front (SRSF), organisation agitating against the dredging and the presence of a casino vessel on the river.

Villagers of Cavelossim, Ambelim, Velim and Assolna have joined the SRSF.

According to SRSF, the presence of the vessel and dredging activity will cause hardship to fishermen.
