HASSAN: The Hassan Rural police on Thursday registered a case of dowry harassment and murder against Puttaswamy, his father, Thimmajogi, and mother, Venkatamma.

The police said that Krishnappa of Chikkanahalli in Belur taluk filed a complaint accusing the three of harassing his sister Puttabhagyamma, who was married to Puttaswamy, for dowry and killing her. The three accused are absconding.

The police said that Puttaswamy of Mosalehosalli village in Hassan taluk had married Puttabhagyamma four years ago. At the time of the wedding Puttabhagyamma’s parents had given 110 gm of gold and Rs. 1.5 lakh in cash as dowry to Puttaswamy. When Puttaswamy started harassing Puttabhagyamma to bring more dowry, her parents gave him Rs. 50,000.

Three months ago, the couple, who had two children, shifted their residence from Mosalehosalli to Hassan.

On Wednesday night, Puttaswamy’s parents came to his house here and the three threatened to kill Puttabhagyamma if she did not bring more dowry, the police said. Puttabhagyamma informed this to Krishnappa on Wednesday night over the phone. When Krishnappa came to the house on Thursday morning he was told that Puttabhagyamma was dead. Following which, he filed the police complaint. In the complaint, he said that when he saw his sister’s body in the mortuary there were blood stains on her mouth, ears and head.
