Shimoga Rural MLA Sharada Poorya Naik has called upon officials of the Department of Forest not to budge to political pressures while discharging their duty.
The reckless destruction of forest resources and pollution of water bodies in the name of development has resulted in global warming. It is necessary to implement the laws related to forest conservation strictly and prevent pollution, she said after flagging-off a bicycle jatha organised to mark the Wildlife Week in the city on Tuesday.
Stressing the need to create awareness on environmental conservation among the youth, she said preserving biodiversity should become part of the school curriculum.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal highlighted the importance of increasing green cover in the residential areas by planting saplings.
Conservator of Forest Smitha Bijur gave details on various competitions organised by the Department to mark the Wildlife Week. Superintendent of Police Koushalendra Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat Sasikanth Senthil, and Deputy Conservator of Forest T.J. Ravi Kumar were present.
