Gerald Isaac Lobo to be installed as bishop
Preparations for formation of Diocese of Udupi and installation of Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo as bishop of the diocese are in full swing on the Milagres Cathedral Grounds at Kallianpur, where the event will be held on Monday.
Addressing presspersons at Kallianpur on Saturday, Stany B. Lobo, parish priest of Milagres Cathedral and chairman of Udupi Diocese Installation Committee, said guests and the bishop-designate would be given a reception at 2 p.m. ahead of the holy mass at 2.30 p.m.
He said the inauguration of the diocese and installation of the bishop of diocese would take place during the mass. Most Rev. Dr. Salvotore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio, would be the principal prelate along with Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo as the main celebrant of the mass. The mass would be followed by a public reception.
Most Rev. Dr. Salvatore Pennacchio would preside over the function. Rt. Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, president of the Udupi Diocese Installation Committee, would welcome the guests.
Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras, Archbishop of Bangalore, Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math, Rt. Rev. Dr. J.S. Sadananda, CSI Bishop, Mangalore, Oscar Fernandes, MP, Kota Srinivas Poojary, Minister for Ports and Muzrai, K. Jayaprakash Hegde, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, Raghupati Bhat, MLA, M.T. Reju, Deputy Commissioner, N.B. Aboobakkar, Chairman of the Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation (KMDC), and Sunetha S. Poojary, president of Kallianapur Gram Panchayat, would be the guests, he said.
He said around 15,000 people were expected to attend the ceremony. They included the Nuncio, 33 bishops and 250 priests.
The Pope Benedict XVI announced formation of the Diocese of Udupi and appointed Bishop of Shimoga Diocese Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo as its first bishop on July 16, he said.
Udupi district had been part of Mangalore Diocese since 1887.
Catholics settled in this part of the district in the middle of 16th century and most of them were Konkani speaking migrants from Goa.
The new diocese had 48 parishes of Karkala, Udupi and Kundapur taluks. There were 1.25 lakh Catholics, 58 diocesan priests, 20 religious priests/brothers and 225 religious sisters, Fr. Lobo said.
Very Rev Fr. Anil D’Souza, Kundapur, and Very Rev Fr. Stany Tauro, Shirva, were present.
