Shabdik Varma of Dharmastala displayed his class in the Karnataka State sub-junior FIDE rated chess championship-2011 held at the State Youth Centre in Bangalore recently.

He and Girish Koushik (world gold medal winner) from Mysore were the only unbeaten players after eight rounds. But the in ninth and final round Varma playing white against Koushik won the match within 27 moves thereby denying the rare honour of remaining unbeaten all through to the better-known player.

M.S. Gururaj, president, South Kanara District Chess Association, said here in a statement that Varma won six games and drew in three collecting 7.5 points in nine rounds. With this, Varma (FIDE rating 1736) along with Koushik (2293), Naren N. Kumar (1756) of Bangalore, and Augustin (1956) of Kodagu, qualified to represent Karnataka in the upcoming national sub-junior chess championship to be held next month in Chennai.

Varma was among the 121 players — including 54 FIDE-rated players – from throughout Karnataka who had participated in the event. Varma was placed third in the final standings after Koushik and Kumar. Augustin was placed fourth.

Varma is a student of Mangalore Chess Academy being coached by International Master Shivanand B.S. and the former national A player Arvind Shastry, Mr. Gururaj added.
