MYSORE: Activists of the Citizen’s Committees for Coordination Forum held a demonstration on Tuesday to protest against the recent hike in parking fee on the premises of the Mysore Railway Station.

The protesters held placards and banners and shouted slogans against the railway authorities and demanded immediate withdrawal of the hike, which came into effect from October 1.

The parking fee used to be Rs. 2 till 10 p.m. every day and Rs. 4 for overnight parking. But the present parking fee of Rs. 5 for up to four hours, Rs. 10 and Rs. 15 slab for hourly parking and Rs. 20 for overnight parking would burden the people, the protesters said.

According to a memorandum submitted to the Divisional Railway Manager, Mysore, the committee contended that the increase would be a financial burden on railway commuters who use two-wheelers to reach the railway station. The protesters said that the parking area did not have a shelter and that there was no protection for the vehicles. Instead of increasing the parking fee, the railway authorities should have taken steps to provide a proper shelter and create a space to keep helmets safely, they added.

The public, which is already reeling under the impact of inflation and rise in prices of essential commodities, will not be in a position to bear the additional burden of the increase in parking fee, the protesters said.
