Residents of Devanapalli village on Saturday staged a dharna on the premises of the zilla panchayat in protest against the alleged stoppage of drinking water supply.

The protesters, including women, decided to continue their dharna till the problem was sorted out by the zilla panchayat.

Pump house closed

In a complaint handed over to chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat M.G. Vijayakumar, the protesters said that drinking water supply to the village had been suspended three days ago following the closure of the pump house.

The people had no other source as most of the existing borewells and a canal near the village had become dry.

They alleged that Shivappa, a member of the Devanapalli gram panchayat, was responsible for stopping the supply of drinking water to the village.

Allegation

He had allegedly locked the pump house. A complaint had been filed at the Yergera police station demanding the arrest of Mr. Shivappa, they said.

They withdrew the dharna after Mr. Vijayakumar said that steps would be taken to restore the water supply and the police would be asked to take action against Mr. Shivappa.
