A large number of activists take out procession

The Davangere district Congress and the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike have demanded that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddurappa drop the Reddy brothers from the Cabinet immediately in the wake of the decision of the Central Empowered Committee appointed by the Supreme Court, which declared the mining activities taken up by Reddy brothers in the Bellary reserved forest area as “illegal”.

Large number of activists of the vedike took out a procession along with the effigies of the Reddy brothers and later burnt them at Gandhi Circle. They raised slogans against them for “robbing” the natural resources of the State. They also raised slogans against the Chief Minister for shielding them in spite of knowing that they had indulged in illegal mining activities.

K.G. Yellappa, president of the Davangere unit of the vedike and Chandramouli, vice-president of the vedike, have in a statement said that Reddy brothers had no moral right to continue in their posts. “But they were so stubborn and thick-skinned that they were still indulged in defending themselves even after the CEC had declared the mining done by them as illegal,” they said. Hence the BJP should direct the Chief Minister to drop the Ministers from the Cabinet.

D. Basavaraj, general secretary of Davangere district Congress, has in a statement issued here on Sunday questioned what moral right the Reddy brothers had to continue as Ministers. He accused the Reddy brothers of looting huge forest lands in Bellary and surrounding areas. Apart from this, they were also directly responsible for damaging public infrastructure like roads. Not just the roads in and around Bellary had been damaged but also all the ones on the routes the mining trucks had been operated.

Mr. Basavaraj noted that the CEC also stated in its report that many senior officials in Bellary district had been hand in glove with the Reddy brothers in carrying out illegal mining and demanded that such officials also be punished by the State Government. He also urged both the State and Union Government to initiate immediate action to cancel the licences of mining granted to Reddy brothers as directed by the CEC.
