Rolls are used for hot and cold rolling of flat steel

  • Industry expects unprecedented demand for rolls
  • Lead time for delivery a cause for concern

TORANAGAL (BELLARY DISTRICT): The need for collaboration between global and Indian roll manufacturers was stressed at an international workshop on "Rolls for Flat Rolling of Steel."

Speaking to presspersons about the outcome of the two-day workshop, which was organised by JSW Steel Ltd. at its Vijayanagar facility here, B.N. Singh, Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the demand for rolls with big diameter was increasing as the steel scenario in the country was changing.

Rolls were needed for hot and cold rolling of flat steel. A few companies in the country produced rolls with small diameter while big rolls had to be imported. As the orders were plenty, delivery was expected only after a couple of years after placing orders. "The steep increase in demand for flat products would translate into increased demand for back-up and work rolls for flat rolling. The steel producers' expectations for high performance rolls for increased productivity and improved surface conditions are on the rise. Roll manufacturers, domestic and international, need to brace themselves up for unprecedented demand for rolls for cold and hot rolling of flat steel in the country. The ever-increasing lead time for delivery of rolls, which is a major concern of the steel producers, needs to be addressed to facilitate growth of the steel industry in the country," he said.

Nearly 135 delegates, including 40 foreign delegates, evincing interest in roll manufacturing, roll preparation and dressing, mill technology supply and flat rolled products, participated in the workshop, he said.

He said the workshop had four sessions: new developments in selection of hot and cold rolls, preparation of rolls and failure analysis, mill experience and self-enhancement. In all 23 technical papers were presented.
