Bank has stopped releasing funds, says project consultant
Union Labour and Employment Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge came down on Regional Airport Holdings International Ltd. (RAHI) for failing to complete work on the Gulbarga airport runway.
Chairing a review meeting of the vigilance and monitoring committee here on Friday, Mr. Kharge told the consultant of the airport project Uma Mahesh that the government would be forced to launch an investigation regarding the delay and the use of funds. When Mr. Mahesh said there was no progress in completing works on the runway, construction of a terminal building and other infrastructure, Mr. Kharge said it was unfortunate that the agency which had been entrusted with the work had delayed the project.
Mr. Mahesh told the Minister that the bank that was assisting the project had stopped releasing funds since the State government had not responded to RAHI’s request to extend the deadline to complete the works to May, 2013.
However, Deputy Commissioner Prasanna Kumar said the government had extended the deadline to March 31, 2013.
To a query, the consultant said so far Rs. 101 crore had been spent on works by taking loans. Mr. Kharge said the agency had done little to complete the project on time even after the State government extended the deadline. He directed the Deputy Commissioner to summon senior officials of the RAHI and conduct a detailed review.
