Unable to withstand pressure of creditors, a 29-year-old autorickshaw driver allegedly hanged himself from the roof of a hotel in Urva police station limits on Wednesday.
According to police, Jayaraj, a resident of Shakti Nagar, checked in to the hotel in Urwa Stores on Tuesday night. His family members got anxious when he did not return home and started searching for him. They found him in a room that was locked from inside. Jayaraj’s brother Pushparaj told police that his brother was being harassed for the last few days by creditors. Jayaraj is survived by his wife and a six-year-old son.
A 30-year-old man died after he fell down from the fourth floor of an under-construction building in Vyasa Nagar near KPT on Wednesday evening. The Mangalore East police said details of the incident were not immediately available.
Neermarga clash probe
Eleven persons, who were allegedly involved in a group clash in Neermarga on Saturday, surrendered before jurisdictional Judicial Magistrate First Class court on Wednesday. The court remanded them in judicial custody until October 1. Supporters of Rehmanth, facing an attempt to murder case, clashed with a group of residents in Neermaraga after the latter produced Rehmanth before the Mangalore Rural police.
The body of a 72-year-old widower, who is believed to have been strangled during an unsuccessful robbery attempt, was found in his house near Balgod village near Subramanya on Tuesday.
Purushottam Poojary, a farmer at Upukal who has been living alone in his house after his wife passed away, was smothered by wrapped cloth around his face, said H.V. Sudarshan, Circle Inspector, Sullia. Though the incident may have occurred around Monday evening or night, the body was found only on Tuesday morning when neighbours called upon him.
The house was ransacked, but nothing seemed to have been stolen. “He is rich, but does not keep much gold or money in the house,” said the police official.
