BANGALORE: Over 5,000 Dalit women from across the State took part in a public rally on Monday demanding that the Government give them land up to five acres. They also asked that Dalit women working in around 1.5 lakh acres of government land should be given “hakku patras”.

Permission for Special Economic Zones should be stopped and the law on land ceiling should be brought back, said P. Yashoda, convener of Karnataka Dalit Women Vedike, said.

Instead of setting aside land surrounding Bangalore for auctions, the Government should distribute it among the poor, she said.

Land tribunals should be set up in every taluk to oversee the distribution.

Applications of those who seek ownership of the land they are tilling, under Forms 50 and 53, should be accepted.

The vedike submitted a memorandum to the office of Governor Rameshwar Thakur.
