Members of the Akhil Bharat Dalit Kriya Samiti staged a protest here on Tuesday in protest against a proposal of the City Municipal Council to increase the water tariff.

V. Bhagawan, president of the samiti, said that the budget proposals presented by the municipal council for 2013-14 mentioned that the monthly water tariff rates would be increased from Rs. 60 to Rs. 120 for each household and from Rs. 120 to Rs. 240 a month for each commercial connection.

Accusing the municipal council of failing to manage drinking water distribution system efficiently, Mr. Bhavawan said that despite Shimoga located on the bank of Tunga River, many localities were facing drinking water scarcity owing to official apathy.

He expressed anguish over the newly elected councillors for not raising their voice against the anti-people proposal to hike water tariff. He urged the administrator of the municipal council to drop the proposal, which according to the municipal Commissioner, would come into force from April 1. The samiti members staged a demonstration for some time on the premises of City Municipal Council here on Tuesday.
