The Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Workers' Association has welcomed Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda's budget announcement of a Rs. 1,000-hike in the total wages paid monthly to daily wage workers.

President of the association Chandrasekhar Hiremath in a statement here on Wednesday said the announcement would benefit nearly 17,000 daily wage workers employed in government departments.

Other demand pending

Mr. Hiremath said the daily wage workers would have been more happy if the government had conceded their long-pending demand for regularisation of services.

The Cabinet subcommittee, headed by Public Works Minister C.M. Udasi, had submitted a report recommending regularisation of their services as a one-time measure.

Mr. Hiremath said the Chief Minister should take steps to get the recommendations approved by the Cabinet. He said the government should also take steps to pay minimum wages to librarians and others working in gram panchayat libraries.

He said the government should also intervene and fulfil the Gram Vidyut Pratinidhis' demand for minimum wages.
