Daily wage workers employed in hostels run by the Social Welfare, Backward Classes and Minority departments in the district have decided to launch an indefinite hunger strike on Friday demanding minimum wages of Rs. 4,950 a month.

President of Gulbarga District Hostel Daily Wage Workers’ Association Bhimshetty Yempalli said on Thursday that the indefinite hunger strike would be held outside the office of the Chief Executive Officer of Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat. He said NGOs were exploiting workers by not paying salaries fixed by the government. Mr. Yempalli said most of these workers had been working for at least 15 years. However, none of the employees was covered under Provident Fund and Employees State Insurance, he added.
