Daily wage workers employed in government hostels in the district have demanded that the zilla panchayat disburse their salaries through cheque.

Workers affiliated to the Karnataka Pranta Krishi Kooligarara Sangha staged a demonstration here on Friday demanding payment of salaries through cheque.

They have asked non-governmental organisations running some of these hostels to credit the provident fund amount of the workers regularly into their PF accounts.

They said that although the daily wage employees working in hostels run by the Backward Class and Minorities Department were paid a salary of Rs. 3,000 through cheque, daily wage employees working in hostels run by the Social Welfare Department were not being paid by cheque.

They claimed that officials of the department had gone back on their promise in this regard.

‘NGOs’ responsibility’

The workers said that NGOs that had been entrusted with the responsibility of running some government hostels had not been crediting their PF contribution into the workers’ accounts.

Panchayat officials should ensure that NGOs did that regularly, the workers added.

They demanded that the government cancel orders outsourcing maintenance of hostels to NGOs.

The workers also wanted the salaries of daily wage employees working in hostels to be increased to Rs. 5,000 a month.
