The civil and electrical contractors on Tuesday staged a protest against the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike for not clearing their pending bills.

Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana assured the protesters that he would take up the issue with BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan and ensure that their pending bills were cleared. According to the BBMP Contractors’ Association president R.J. Srinivas, 2,500 contractors have not been paid bills totalling Rs. 1,600 crore for the past 14 months.

“We have always had to stage a protest to get our pending bills cleared. With the Dasara festival round the corner, the BBMP must release our dues. Several contractors are caught in a debt trap,” he added. The protesters later met Mr. Lakshminarayan and discussed the issue.

Mr. Sathyanarayana said the Commissioner had assured the protesters that pending bills totalling Rs. 150 crore would be cleared by Friday. And, pending bills of a month would be released in the first week of October.
