Over 100 undertrials and convicts lodged at the Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara here have taken ill over the last three days, allegedly after consuming contaminated water in the men's barracks.

While about 60 inmates reported diarrhoea on Thursday, over 40 with the same symptoms were treated in the jail's hospital, Prison Superintendent Lingaraju said.

“We are yet to ascertain the reason. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials have come here and collected samples for testing. The results will be available soon,” he said.

The prison currently has 4,300 inmates, and both Cauvery and borewell water is supplied to them. Mr. Lingaraju said the five water storage tanks and three borewells are tested from time to time.

However, another official suspected contamination by sewage water or the water quality compromised by corroded borewell pipes which were laid in the 1990s.

Sources said that the water tanks were cleaned on Thursday.
