A Police Constable was stabbed and an Assistant Sub Inspector injured when they tried to arrest two career criminals trying to extort money from the public here on Monday evening, J.J. Nagar police said.

Around 6 p.m., the police control room received a message that two armed men were going around threatening people and extorting money near the railway track in Gowripalya.

ASI Challuvaiah and Constable Prakash, who were on their rounds, rushed to the spot. On seeing them, one of the armed men ran away while the other, Manjunath, attacked the two police personnel.

Even as the two policemen fought off the history sheeter, the public stood as mute spectators. Manjunath stabbed Constable Prakash in the stomach but he and his colleague overpowered their attacker and arrested him. The police said tht he appeared to be under the influence of a psychotropic substance.

The injured constable was then rushed to Victoria Hospital. His condition is said to be stable. J.J. Nagar police have registered a case.
