The Western Ghats, an ecologically sensitive spot, has been considered as a source of income by some vested interests, coordinator of Vruksha Laksha Andolan B.H. Raghavendra has said.

He was speaking at an environment awareness programme held at Mankalale near Sagar on Saturday under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, Vasudha Raitha Koota and Chaitanya Rural Development Society.

He said that mining, construction of reservoirs and power projects caused damage to the fragile Western Ghats. The vested interests wanted to exploit the rich mineral resources in the Western Ghats. It was the right time to educate the people of Malnad region about the need to conserve the Western Ghats. Though Malnad was the birth place of many rivers and streams, the region faced drinking water crisis during summer, he said.
