SHIMOGA: Members of the Minorities Cell of the Shimoga District Congress Committee staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday to protest against the attacks on churches and places of worship belonging to minority groups.

In a memorandum addressed to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj, which was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner Nirvanappa, the demonstrators urged the Government to ensure that action was taken against those who were involved in the attacks on the churches and other places of worship.

They said that the people belonging to the minority groups were feeling insecure in the light of the attacks on churches and other places of worship which were reported from Bhatkal, Mysore, Mulkalmuru.

Condemned

They condemned the reported statement of Home Minister V.S. Acharya that it was the responsibility of the minorities to protect their places of worship as the Government could not provide any protection to them.

They urged the Government to take action against those involved in the incidents and ensure that minorities lived peacefully.

Those who led the demonstration included Abdul Wahid Addu, Devendrappa, Kiran Fernandes, Jayasheelan, A.B. Martis and Jameela Khanam.
