Congress members staging a dharna against the remarks made by a former zilla panchayat president in Mysore on Thursday.

Congress members of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat walked out of the general meeting here on Thursday, protesting against the remarks made by Sunita Veerappa Gowda, Janata Dal (S) member and former president of zilla panchayat, when they sought to discuss the Cauvery issue and pass a resolution condemning water release to Tamil Nadu.

Efforts made by zilla panchayat president K.P. Siddaveerappa to calm the members failed, resulting in the walkout.

As soon as the meeting began, Congress member K. Maruti told Mr. Siddaveerappa to start the discussion on Cauvery. However, Ms. Gowda intervened by enquiring into the day’s agenda. She further alleged that the Congress had “compromised” with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party during the Assembly session over the water release and that the Congress was “shamelessly” seeking the panchayat to press for a discussion.

Mr. Maruti and other Congress members protested against the remarks and staged a walkout.

Efforts by Mr. Siddaveerappa and vice-president M.K. Suchitra yielded results only after nearly 45 minutes when Congress members returned to demand an apology from Ms. Gowda. Finally, Ms. Gowda stated that she would apologise if her remarks had hurt any member.Resolution

In a rare display of unanimity, members, cutting across party lines, passed a resolution condemning the release of Cauvery waters and decided to send copies of the resolution to the State government, the Centre and the Governor.

Mr. Maruti reinitiated the discussion, blaming the State government for failing to provide the correct picture to the Centre and the Supreme Court over the issue.

Water-levels in the reservoir were down, groundwater was depleting, and farmers’ crops were withering, he said.

Another member said the water release amounted to committing “atrocity” on farmers. Ms. Gowda said no more water should be let out of the States’ reservoirs.

L. Madappa of the Congress said there was drought in the State and there was no water for crops and fodder for cattle. BJP and JD (S) members too spoke against the water release.
