MANGALORE: A few Congress members of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat have urged the party higher-ups to expel Santosh Kumar Bhandari from the party.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday with other members of the party in Zilla Panchayat (ZP), Shavul Hameed said Mr. Bhandary had committed a breach of trust by voting for K.P. Sucharitha Shetty of the Janata Dal (Secular) to elect Mr. Shetty as the president of ZP on September 22 while other Congress members had voted for Abdul Aziz Malar, also of the Janata Dal (Secular) as per the decision of the party.

The vote of Mr. Bhandari resulted in Mr. Shetty getting elected as ZP president. Mr. Bhandari had defended his move by claiming that the Congress had not issued any whip to vote for Mr. Malar. The Congress members have claimed that on the night before the election, Mr. Malar had not responded to senior party functionaries of the party over his cellphone.
