The Congress, under the leadership of Deepak Chinchore, Leader of the Opposition at the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), started a signature campaign against the increase in fee for building licence and permission for constructions, here on Tuesday. Representatives from various organisations took part in the agitation to express their solidarity with the campaign. Later, a dharna was staged in front of the HDMC office. Mr. Chinchore lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-run HDMC for “betraying the people” after coming to power. Like the party leaders in the State, the members here too were looting people, he charged.

Other municipal corporations run by the BJP, such as Bangalore and Mangalore, had not applied such exorbitant and unscientific hike in fees, he said. The revised fee structure makes it impossible for people to build houses or undertake any construction, Mr. Chinchore said.
